There are some ways to grow your hair faster and thicker. So, how to make hair grow faster and thicker?

I wish I could give you a magic bullet that would add inches to your hair overnight, but, alas that is not how this works.

It’s a process and you have to be diligent, but if you follow my advice on how to get hair to grow faster then you’ll see some really nice results.

Read on for all the details!

How fast does your hair grow per month?

Everybody is different but on average your hair grows between .25 inch and .5 inch per month. Some people got lucky with the genetic lottery and can see growth of twice that amount, but those people are few and far between.

That’s the speed normally, so our aim is to jumpstart that growth and give it a boost. How much faster are we talking? I doubt we could double that speed, but we may be able to add a few millimeters per month. Which doesn’t sound like a lot, but in 2 months it will make a noticeable difference.

How does hair grow?

You may not be too interested in how hair grows, but I want to explain the process to you so you understand why the tips I am going to give you will work. I know you just want to see what you need to do, but this is important if you want to know how to grow hair faster men.

An average scalp has about 120,000 hair follicles.

At the bottom of all of these follicles is the root. This root is made up of a protein called keratin.

These roots are fed by small capillaries that bring blood flow. In this blood there is oxygen and all the nutrients that you hair needs to grow.

There are three phases of growth that your hair will go through.

  • Anagen – At any one time about 85% of your hair will be in this growth phase at any given time. It literally is growing 24 hours a day when it is in this phase that lasts about 2 to 6 years.
  • Catagen – Once your hair ends the anagen phase, a signal is sent out to the follicle to transition to the last phase which is to rest. This transition phase lasts about 2 weeks. What happens is that the follicle shrinks and the roots falls out. What is the signal? It is a hormone called melanin that tells the hair that has finished growing to enter this renewal phase.
  • Telogen – This is the resting phase during which about 10 to 15% of your hair is at any one time. Your hair follicles are dormant for a couple of months while it waits for the signal to start growing again. It is still unknown to science what this signal is, but there are many known reasons for hair to enter the telogen phase.

Ok, with this primer out of the way, you may already see where this is going. Knowing how the hair grows and what the cycle is like, we can kind of hack the growth process and that is how to get the hair to grow faster.

How to get hair to grow faster

Ok, we have arrived at the point you have been looking for. So, let’s recap a few things and then it will make sense why I wanted you to understand how your hair grows.

Your hair is made out of protein. It is fed by your blood to grow and get nutrients. And it has three different growth phases.

Our aim is to use this to our advantage.

Since your hair is made out of protein, you should be eating foods that will help encourage the hair to grow.

Since you need the blood to bring that nutrition to your hair, you should increase the circulation.

And to keep the most hair growing as possible you should do what you can to keep the anagen phase running as long as possible.

If you manage to improve even just two of these three things then your hair will grow faster.

Nail down all three and you are going to turbo charge it!

How do you do this?

Well, there are a lot of ways so let me get right to the list.

Tip #1 – Change Your Diet

Your hair is made up of cells just like any other part of your body, but there is a key thing to remember. Your body naturally will allot your nutrients to the important parts of your body like your organs and things like that. Obviously, you can survive just fine without hair, so your system will serve up all the nutrients and minerals to your hair last. Improving your diet will give you a bonus of healthy stuff that will be sent over to your hair. And healthy hair will grow faster.

Drink More Water

Since we are mainly made up of water, it stands to reason that we need a lot of it. Your scalp for instance needs to be hydrated to take care of itself, and then your hair. I can’t stress enough that when you are deficient in something, whether it is a nutrient or, in this case, water, that your hair will be the last to receive any of the benefits.

Take in as much water as you can to properly hydrate your scalp. A dry scalp will have trouble growing hair is the bottom line.

How much water is enough? At least 2 liters, or a half a gallon of water per day.

Eat More Protein

I don’t mean start eating steak everyday. You need plenty of protein since your hair is made out of it, but your sources need to vary.

Keep the red meat to a minimum but add to your protein intake by eating legumes like beans and chickpeas, fish (sardines and salmon are best), spinach and nuts.

If you just eat meat thinking you’re doing yourself a favor, you are limiting other nutrients that are also beneficial.

Omega 3

An example of something you are missing out on by not varying your source of protein is Omega 3. This can be found in oily fish like the aforementioned salmon and sardines, but is also found in mackerel, herring and even flax seed.

Omega 3 is a fatty acid that encourages the growth of new hair and helps to repair damaged cells. It is a very important building block in your entire system so it should be added in abundance to make its way to your scalp and hair.

Vitamin E

Free radicals can be found streaming throughout our bodies, including our scalp. This can cause cell damage that will inhibit the growth of your hair. If you are trying to grow your hair in a rush then this has to be avoided.

To beat these free radicals we need Vitamin E. Your hair will not only grow faster when the roots are being repaired but it will also look and feel fuller and have a healthier sheen to it.

To get more Vitamin E, eat more nuts and cereals. No, I don’t mean Lucky Charms, I mean things like wheat berries or oats.

Leafy greens are also great as well as nuts and seeds.

Tip #2 – Use Better Hair Products

If you are looking for tips on how to grow your hair faster men just because you feel it grows slowly in general, then dropping the heavy hair products should help.

Hairsprays, pomades, waxes and gels can clog your pores up and slow down your hair growth. The really bad ones can leave a layer on your scalp that can lead to dry skin or dandruff and that is not what you need when you want to grow your hair in a hurry.

Look for water based hair products, especially if you are using a pomade. Petroleum jelly is not your friend and pomades usually use a ton of it. So do some other products. Make sure you read the list of ingredients well before putting some in your hair.

Here are some good lightweight and water based hair products:

No matter how natural the hair product is, you need to apply it very lightly. Go easy on it even if you have a complicated hairstyle.

You also shouldn’t leave it in your hair any longer than necessary. If you need to keep your hair in place for work, then wash it out as soon as you get home. Never go to sleep with it still in your hair.

Tip #3 – Shampoo Less

I give this advice to all guys regardless if they want to know how to make hair grow faster and thicker.

Don’t shampoo your hair every day.

Even if you use an all natural shampoo you lose your scalp’s and hair’s natural oils which is crucial for your hair growth. Again, this is important no matter what even when you aren’t in a rush to grow your hair.

When you strip your hair of these oils, then your hair doesn’t get all the nourishment it needs. Now, many natural shampoos have ingredients that do wonders for your hair by moisturizing and softening, but nothing is as good as the sebum, or natural oil, that your scalp produces.

And if you use a clarifying shampoo then you run the risk of drying out your scalp which will slow down your hair growth.

Instead, I recommend washing your hair every other day, max. That way your scalp can do its thing and your hair won’t look greasy. If you have really greasy hair, then just rinse it very well with warm water.

Tip #4 – Workout More

I talked about blood flow earlier and how important it is for your hair growth. Imagine a way to increase that blood flow and what do you think happens? You send a rush of nutrients to your scalp and your hair loves it.

One of the best ways to do this is exercise. You don’t have to become a gym rat to get the blood flowing. If you already go to the gym, then great. If you aren’t a gym guy then get out for a walk for 40 minutes per day. Maybe lift some weights while you are watching TV. Or you can do some yoga for an hour or so a few times per week.

Whatever way you choose to workout is up to you, but make sure you set up a schedule and stick to it if you want to know how to get hair to grow faster.

Tip #5 – Use Serums and Oils

You may remember in the old cartoons like Bugs Bunny when a character would put some so-called hair tonic on their head and suddenly sprout a huge fro.

Well, hair tonics are an actual thing and they can work to help when you want to know how to grow hair faster and thicker.

And these days there are also tons of essential oils that have been rediscovered and work wonders on your scalp and hair.

For instance, peppermint oil has been found recently to work as well as Minoxidil when it comes to growing your hair. How is this possible? It goes back to blood flow as I explained. It is menthol and invigorates the scalp and encourages increased circulation. And, once again this increased circulation will bring tons of oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicle so your hair will get a boost.

Another great oil is coconut oil. It has a lot of antiseptic properties and will clear your scalp of any clogged pores or bacteria to build up that might be slowing down your hair growth. But, what really makes it ideal is something else. Remember I mentioned the phases of hair growth? Well, coconut oil keeps the anagen, or growth phase, going for longer. So when some of your hairs would ordinarily start to go into the transition, or catagen, phase they keep growing. This is a super effective way to grow your hair fast.

Then hair tonics can come in. These days they are more likely to be called serums, but they are pretty much the same thing.

If you want to know how to make hair grow faster and thicker then you should be looking at a serum. They usually have hyaluronic acid which boosts moisture to the hair, peptides which reduce the effects of aging like hair growth slow down and other nourishing ingredients. A combination that keeps your hair healthy and will speed up the growth.

Tip #6 – Take Supplements

I can hear you all groaning now with this suggestion.

Hair growth supplements couldn’t possibly work! Well, that may be true for some of them, but there is some science behind them and they can and do work.

You have to really focus on the ingredients.

A good hair growth pill will have a lot of the vitamins that I had mentioned in the diet section, plus some other herbal and mineral ingredients.

What you won’t get from normal diet is the abundance and concentration of things like Vitamins A, E, the Bs and keratin.

Keratin being high on the list. If you don’t see keratin listed as an ingredient, then I would keep looking.

That is, after all, the building block of your hair and nails. In fact, you’ll also be clipping your nails more often as they will also grow a lot faster.

The best supplement for hair growth I have come across is Hairfluence by Zhou on Amazon.com. What I like about it is that it is not a hair loss prevention treatment. It’s focus is on building healthier hair and growing it faster. As such it doesn’t have any DHT blockers that try to suppress your hormone that cause some hair loss. This is god news for guys with beards who won’t have to worry about their beard being affected by the pills.

FAQ About How to Get Hair to Grow Faster

Q: Does hair grow faster in the summer?

A: Amazingly, yes it does. It often gets chalked up to being an old wives tale, but your hair speeds up in the summer for some logical reasons.

For one thing, most of your hair enters an anagen period around spring time. This is the growth phase so new hairs are coming in around spring and this stage encourages all the hair still in the anagen phase to speed up its growth.

Another reason is that people are less stressed in the summer. Stress does have a huge effect on how our skin and hair behave. When we are stressed, your hair growth is highly affected.

Another reason is that we tend to eat fresher, healthier foods, get more exercise outside and drink a lot more water. Summer is just a healthier season in general and our hair responds accordingly.

Q: Does hair growth slow down as we get older?

A: Yes, but that doesn’t mean you will go bald when you are older. If you have male pattern baldness it can strike at any time and is due to genes and not necessarily age. What does happen as we get older is the catagen phase affects more of your hair. This is when the growth phase shuts off and many roots go dormant in the transition to the resting phase. Then the telogen phase, which is when hair rests, lasts longer. This slows down the speed that your hair grows considerably.

Q: Will shaving my head make my hair grow thicker?

A: This is one of the biggest myths out there. If you could grow thicker hair by shaving your head, I would not be bald right now!

Your hair follicles are tapered in shape, meaning they are thicker towards the root and thinner towards the tip. If you shave your hair, it feels very tough and thick because you’ve cut right across the thickest part of the hair. Think of when you cut down a tree. The trunk is left and it is far thicker than the top branches.

Your hair will only ever be as thick as that root. There is no way to make it thicker at that end. You can make the strand thicker by using different products, but the width of the base of the hair will always be the same. And you can’t grow any hair where there was no root to begin with so shaving won’t automatically add strands of hair. It just feels that way.

Final Thoughts

Everybody’s hair growth is different. It is even different among races as African hair grows much more slowly than Caucasian. And among Caucasians, it varies as well. Redheads have slower hair growth speed in general than other ethnicities.

So, you have to take these tips on how to grow hair faster men with a grain of salt. You may see dramatic results or you may not even notice a difference.

I hope that you get what you are looking for and that this article is helpful, but as I mentioned before, there is no magic bullet when it comes to growing hair faster.

Do all of the things on the list and you are giving you a good chance to see some impressive growth.
