When I was 16, I could go weeks without shaving and would still end up with a barely noticeable beard.

My friend, on the other hand, looked like he was about 30 years old when we were 16 because he had a full beard. He never had to ask how long it takes to grow a beard because he could grow one in the time it took me to put on my shoes.

It took me to get to my twenties to grow a full beard.

I wish that the internet was around back then so I could have read a guide on how to grow a beard at 16 so I wouldn’t have had to wait so long!

Even though patience is the name of the game for any teen trying to grow a beard since hormones are very much in play when it comes to beard growth, there are some tips I can give to improve your teenage beard.

How to Grow a Beard at 16

Unless you’re like my friend I just described, your beard is probably going to grow, but it will grow wispy and patchy.

Your hormones are all touch and go at this point and you might not have enough testosterone to get your beard as thick as it should be.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t grow a beard.

It just means that you need to temper your expectations that it is going to come in full and thick. And you need to do a few things to make sure you’re working with what you have to make it look good anyway.

Here are a few things to do to grow a beard thicker and in less time:

Skin Care 101

It’s no secret that a teenagers face is a bit of a war zone. Overactive hormones, out of control oil production and all over acne are hard to tame.

But, tame it, you must.

Your skin and beard health go hand in hand.

If you have skin problems, like clogged pores and acne, then it is going to affect your beard growing ability.

Use some products to get rid of acne and keep it from returning. In doing so, you’ll be clearing out your pores of the grime that can be clogging the roots of the hair follicle. This will give it a chance to grow the way it should.

Eat right

I know you want to eat junk all day, but there aren’t any vitamins in that burger or those potato chips that will help your beard grow.

Your beard needs Vitamin E to fight off any free radicals that are preventing it from growing.

It also needs plenty of Vitamin A which helps sebum production, the natural oil that will coat your beard and keep it hydrated. This is especially important since you’re going to be stripping away that sebum when you use skin care products.

Vitamin A will also keep the sebum production regulated so your body doesn’t keep overproducing sebum and clogging pores.

Stay active

If your idea of exercise is playing Fortnite, then you’re going to have to change some habits to get your beard game going.

When you exercise, and it doesn’t matter what kind, your circulation is going non stop. The blood is bringing oxygen and nutrients all over your body. Even your beard hair follicles. This stimulation will help your hair get the nutrients it needs and will at the very minimum speed up your beard growth.

Get some sleep

When you’re sleeping your body has a chance to repair any cell damage that happened during the day. When these cells are healthy, they will produce everything the body needs to keep your skin and hair healthy as well. Getting plenty of sleep will show you some improvement on your beard thickness and how fast it grows.

Besides that, stress is also a big player when it comes to inhibiting your beard growth and sleep can help beat stress. There’s nothing better at combatting stress than getting a good restful sleep.

Use a beard brush

You won’t be using this until your beard has already grown in. To get those follicles thicker and fuller, then using a beard brush will get that started.

A beard brush will help distribute your skins natural oils evenly over each of the follicles of your beard.

And your skin will have a much-improved circulation from the brush. As I already mentioned, this will bring important nutrients and oxygen to your beard hair.

Get some beard oil

When you’ve been using skin care problems, your skin’s oils get stripped and leave your beard dry and brittle.

Using a beard oil will replenish that natural oil and keep your beard full and thick in the process.

There are even beard oils for growth that contain vitamins specifically to help your beard grow faster and come in thicker.

Take some pills

It may seem like a magic bullet to suggest taking a pill, but try to not imagine your beard hair sprouting out like crazy after taking one.

What I am talking about are beard growth supplements in pill form.

They contain all the vitamins and nutrients your beard needs to give it a growth boost. They are all natural and many of the benefits would come from eating the right foods. But you would have to eat tons of it to get the same doses that you’ll find in these supplements.

Will it get you the beard of your dreams? Not likely.

Again, it is not a magic potion that guarantees tons of new hair and beards growing in days. It just gives a noticeable boost that to some is better than doing nothing at all.

Make the most of what you have

By this I mean, don’t try to make your beard something it is not.

If your beard is patchy but grows in thicker around your mustache and chin, then focus your attention there and maybe keep the cheeks trimmed up.

If your hair is wispy, then the longer you let it grow the thinner it looks. Maybe go for the slightly longer than stubble look and shave the edges to give it some shape. When you trim your beard down, the base of the hair is actually thicker than the ends. This will give a thicker appearance instead of highlighting how thin the hairs actually are.

If you do end up growing it long, then try to use the beard brush to get it going in the same direction and this will give the appearance of a fuller beard.

Wrapping it up

You’re probably wondering when I will finally answer the question of how long does it take to grow a beard at 16 years old.

The answer is: Longer than you want it to take.

Sorry. Since every beard is different and since every person has a different set of circumstances that dictate how long and how thick their beard will grow, there is no real answer to that.

I wish there was some miracle cure I could give you. Like those internet ads. Do this ONE CRAZY TRICK and watch what happens to your beard! Amazing!

Unfortunately, real life does not work that way.

Fortunately, if you follow these tips and tricks then you’re definitely giving yourself a headstart that doesn’t just require waiting until you’re in your 20’s like I was when my beard finally grew in thick.

Sharing is caring!
