Tools to Get Rid of Back Hair

There is no right way or one best way to remove back hair. You have a few options to deal with a hairy back and each has its pros and cons. For starters, some of these methods of hair removal can be done yourself, while others will require a helping hand. Should you go to a salon or do it yourself at home? I can’t really answer that for you, but I will say that you save time and money doing it yourself, so that is where we will focus on this guide. DIY Back Shaver

I wish I had thought of making a giant razor with a long handle like a back scratcher because it is genius. Guys used to have to ask their buddy or their girlfriend to shave their back. Now it only takes a few minutes to properly manscape every inch of your body without any help getting to your back

There are a couple of different types.

One is a regular blade razor that actually shaves your back. They don’t need any shaving cream so it is totally do it yourself.

The other type os more like a back hair trimmer with a foil attachment to shave with an electric back razor.

Which one is better? We’ll look at them individually and figure it out.

Hair Remover Cream for Men

This is probably the easiest way to remove back hair. These days using a body hair removal cream is safe and easy. Some care does need to be followed to not get a chemical burn, but these products are much more gentle than they used to be.

You will likely need somebody to put the cream on your back. You can use a lotion applicator brush for your back from Amazon.com to try to do it yourself. This can be tricky to get all the hairs removed. You may find yourself missing some patches. If you have a good double mirror that allows you to see your entire back, then it is worth a shot.

Even though I said these are safe, it is important to follow the instructions for the specific product you are using. If you leave it on too long you can really damage your skin and a chemical burn is much worse than having annoying back hair.

A couple of handy tips to keep in mind before you use a hair removal cream or spray are to make sure your skin is clean and hydrated and to do a patch test first.

To do a patch test, dab a small amount on the area you’re going to remove the hair and leave it on as long as the instructions recommend. If you do this and find it doesn’t irritate that area, then you’re good to go. If it is uncomfortable, then all bets are off. Imagine that feeling across your entire back!

How long do these creams last to keep the hair from growing back? Generally, 3 to 4 days before you start seeing stubble coming in.

Home Wax Kit for Men

This is definitely a method to remove back hair that requires some help. Can you wax your back yourself? There is no way you will be able to apply the wax and remove it yourself.

If you do have somebody to help you wax your back at home, then you will be rewarded with a smooth back for at least a couple of weeks.

You’ll need to make sure there is enough hair to wax so don’t do this too soon after having shaved or naired your back.

Waxing back hair isn’t as painful as it may seem, but, you may want to be prepared with an Advil just in case.

To prepare your back to be waxed, make sure you wash it well with a good moisturizing soap from Amazon.com. Be totally dry before you begin.

At Home Laser Hair Removal Tool

A few years ago I would have recommended just going to a laser hair removal center to get this done. But, as of late, laser hair removal devices have gotten very good.

If you want to permanently remove back hair, then this is your best option.

This is a process, though. You will likely have to go through many sessions to do keep all the hair from growing back. More so if you have dark skin or very fine hair.

One thing is certain, if you do find hair growing back after doing a laser hair removal treatment, the hair will be much finer and will grow in much sparser than it was before.

Before you go online and get one, check your skin tone with this chart to see which one will work best for your color.

What to look for in a back shaver

If you opt to take the hair off your back the blade way then there are a few things to consider to make sure you make the right purchase.

Here are a few key factors to look for to make sure you get the one that is going to work best for you.

Power Source

Whether you go for battery or manpower, how the shaver operates is pretty important.

Battery power is an obvious benefit since you aren’t tied down to a cord and the trimmer does the work for you. Battery life is the biggest feature when picking a shaver then. The best batteries for any kind of trimmer, whether it’s your back, your beard or your head is going to be Lithium Ion.

There is also a Nickel Cadmium rechargeable battery, but the LI is much better. They last so much longer and can give out a lot more power. Eventually, every rechargeable battery will stop taking a charge and will not get the runtime that it did when it was new. But when you get a Lithium Ion one, that takes years before that happens.

The other alternative that has no need to worry about runtime or recharging is the blade type. They essentially look like giant face cartridge razors. You may not need to recharge it or need to have an outlet handy for a cord, but you do have to make sure its sharp. Not only do you not want to have the blade eventually start pulling your hair, but you don’t want it leaving any patches either. That would look worse than if you just didn’t shave it at all.

The Handle

The length and maneuverability of the handle are as important as the blade. You want it to be long enough to reach the hard to get areas, and also be ergonomic so it is easy to use.

There are some one piece handles that have just the right curve. Even a straight handle can work just fine for some guys, but others may appreciate the fact that the curved handle lets them attack the back from different angles.

There are also two piece handles that can be angled however you like them. You just open up the arms and then lock it into place when you find exactly the right angle.

You may even want to have an extendable reach one since a long handle may make it hard to get the easy to reach areas like your shoulders and upper back.

If your back shaver is waterproof and can be used while wet then make sure the grip is non slip so you don’t have any slip of the hands while you have a sharp object.

Flexible Head

If you are using a battery powered one, then the best type of shaver you can get is the kind with a flexible head. Like your face, you have a lot of contours on your back. Having a head that can keep in contact with the skin as it hits the bumps and crevices will make it easy to get all the hair in fewer passes.

The kind that has the rotary heads usually have buffers underneath each of the shaving discs that make them ideal for your back.

Replacement Blades

You may have some ongoing expenses when you get the blade kind that is not an electric razor. Just like when you get a cartridge razor, you end up locked into always buying that brand. Since you don’t use it as often and your back hair is much different than your facial hair, it doesn’t need replacing as often at least.

Best Hair on Back Removal Shaver

BAKblade 2.0 Back Shaver

What used to be just a back hair removal shaver when the Bakblade was first introduced has now been upgraded to be a whole body shaver. The handle is much more ergonomic and the shape of the blade head now makes it more effective and less irritating. The new shape of the handle can really help to get in all the hard to reach areas. It is even retractable to make it easy to travel with. Easily shave your back either wet or dry thanks to the new design of the blades. They require less pressure to shave so it is much easier on the skin, allowing the blades to glide whether wet or dry for back hair removal If you want to use it to shave other areas like your chest or legs, simply pop off the cartridge. How it works is a bit of a mystery since the blades are not really like razor blades. They are more like teeth that somehow remove the hair. There is little risk of cutting yourself when you can see what you are doing because of the way they are engineered. Of all the back hair removal shavers this is the safest. The Bro Blade is also popular, but the use of a regular double edge razor gives me pause. The result is a very smooth back with no stubble. Though, as with any shaved area, the hair won’t be gone long. Expect to get a few days before you get some scratchy stubble making its way to the surface.

  • Very easy to use
  • Not great on fine hair

  • Very safe

MANGROOMER – ULTIMATE PRO Electric Hair Removal Shaver

Bakblade vs Mangroomer? Which is better for back hair removal? That’s a question I get asked a lot and the answer is not so simple.

Since they are two completely different back hair removal devices, they can’t really be compared.

What I can say is that the Mangroomer is a very effective way to get rid of back hair.

This version especially since it has both a back hair trimmer and then a foil electric razor to get right down to the skin leaving no stubble.

The adjustable arm snaps into various angles so you can securely reach even the hard to get to areas on your back.

Where the Mangroomer does come up the winner is getting around the contours of the back since it has shock absorbing flex necks on the attachments. This allows the head to pivot around and over any bump like a shoulder blade for example.

To use it properly, you should tackle the long hairs with the trimmer attachment. If your hair is thick you may need to go over your back twice to get all of the hairs trimmed down.

Then swap out the trimmer for the foil shaver. This acts just like a foil razor for the face. It has a very sharp set of blades underneath the foil that vibrate to safely shave your hair. With the hairs trimmed, this can get right down to the skin leaving your back as smooth as if you shaved it with a razor.

If you have some wiry hair or just a patch of stubble that doesn’t want to get shaved, there is the Power Burst button that gives a blast of high intensity to really power the hair off your back.

Charging takes about an hour and a full battery lasts at least 45 minutes.

This is not a wet/dry electric razor. This should only be used dry for best results. It isn’t waterproof so definitely don’t try to use it in the shower.

Cleaning it is easy as the heads can be rinsed with water. Just make sure that the heads are totally dry before using.

  • Works as a trimmer and foil razor
  • Can’t be used wet

Best Hair Removal Cream for Men’s Back

Nad’s For Men Hair Removal Cream

Nad’s for men has a name that really brings out my juvenile side as it makes me laugh typing it out.

Don’t get the impression based on the name that this is only for pubic hair removal. This works on any part of the body and is a very gentle back hair removal cream.

It works fast, too, in only 4 minutes depending on your hair type.

It’s so easy to use, too. A little goes a long way, for back hair removal, so just have somebody spread some on your back and leave it there for four minutes. Then wipe a small area with a cloth and see if the hair comes up. If it does then you can remove it by wiping it all off. Otherwise, leave it for a few more minutes, but no longer than 10.

It is a painless formula, but if you feel it getting uncomfortable at any point, make sure to wipe it all off right away.

This works on any skin type, even on sensitive skin.

The hair gets dissolved below the skin’s surface so it leaves it incredibly smooth. How long it lasts depends on how thick your hair is, but a reasonable expectation is a week to two weeks before you have to reapply.

Nair vs Nad’s? Which is better. I have to give the nod to Nad’s. It is painless and works fast compared to Nair. I will say, though, that the Nair Hair Removal Spray from Amazon.com is easier to apply and mess-free.

You'll love it for theseBut you won't like these
  • Works fast
  • Bottle is small
  • Pain free formula
  • Works on sensitive skin

  • Lasts a long time

Best Home Wax Kit for Men’s Back Hair

BodyHonee Hair Removal Waxing Kit Men

Made with only three all natural ingredients, this is as easy for back hair removal as it is to use.

With just sugar, lemon and sea salt it only takes 30 seconds in the microwave to have a professional sugaring kit at home.

It says it works on fine to medium hair, but it can work on coarse hair also. As long as you have not recently shaved your coarse hair as it will have a hard time getting rid of it.

After applying the heated sugar mix, use the woven strips to cover and press 3 or 4 times to get a good adhesion. Then rip it right off. Yes, back hair removal process will hurt but not nearly as much as you would think.

Since you’re taking the hair out roots and all, this will leave your back smooth for 6 to 8 weeks. That is worth the short period of discomfort since it will make your life easier since you won’t be shaving every couple of days.

Clean up is easy as you just need to take a quick shower to rinse it off. It is easy on your skin as there are no chemicals used at all, either.

You’re likely to only get one use out of each package, so it may be a good idea to stock up on some just in case. In fact, there aren’t many spatulas in the kit so it is a good idea to order some extra or get a reusable plastic spatula from Amazon.com.

Because this is natural and chemical free back hair removal procuct, it works great as a back, sack and crack wax to use on other parts of the body.

You'll love it for theseBut you won't like these
  • All natural ingredients
  • Not enough spatulas
  • Stay smooth for 6 to 8 weeks
  • Easy to use

  • Easy to clean up

Best At-Home Laser Hair Removal Device

Remington iLIGHT Pro Plus Quartz Hair Removal System

Technically not a laser since it uses Intense Pulsed Light or IPL, it is the same system that professionals use. Before I dive into how it works, let me say who it won’t work for. If you click that link to the product page on Amazon, there is a skin tone chart that you can use to check your skin tone. It won’t work on darker skin, or even where there are tattoos. If you have very light or white or grey hair, then it won’t work. This works best for people with light to olive skin tone and medium to dark hair. For those people, this works awesome. There is a bit of a learning curve and it takes multiple sessions to see good results. But, the costs are way, way less than what you would spend by going to a laser hair removal center. This back hair removal tool is painless, but some people might feel some tingling. There are strength settings to dial it down or up depending on how strong you need it to be. If you have coarse hair you can dial it up to where you need it and still feel comfortable. The hair is essentially damaged at the root to keep it from growing back. It is supposed to be permanent, but most likely some of the hairs will grow back at some point. Probably in 6 to 8 months. In which case just keep using it until the hair stops growing at all. Obviously, you will need help to use this to permanently with back hair removal, but it is worth it to not have to deal with it anymore. This unit is very long lasting before the bulbs need to be replaced. An average back hair removal session will probably take 750 flashes or so. This unit is capable of 30,000 flashes so you won’t need to be replacing the bulbs for quite some time, if ever. Using the iLight is very safe on the skin with virtually no side effects for most people. One thing you should probably get, though, is a set of safety goggles on Amazon.com for whoever is doing your back. You don’t want to risk a wrong move with the handle and an intense light flash going in your eye.

You'll love it for theseBut you won't like these
  • Very effective
  • Doesn’t work on all skin tones
  • Great price (much lower than professional treatments)
  • Bulb lasts a long time

  • Almost permanent results

Last Tip for Dealing with Back Hair

The last idea that I can share with you on how to deal with back hair is this: Nothing. Maybe just leaving it is the best route. Modern life has us really busy and there is a lot of pressure involved. Maybe for peace of mind it would be nice just to accept that you have back hair and let it be somebody else’s problem if they don’t like it.
