Whether it is because you feel like you don’t have the time, or maybe you are on a budget, but for whatever reason, you are on the fence about buying beard oil.

I get the question all the time at the shop.

Does beard oil work?

It’s something every bearded guy wants to know before he shells out cash and adds it to his daily grooming routine.

The short answer is, yes, it does.

Beard oil does a lot of things and your beard absolutely needs it. I will go into what it does, and what the benefits of beard oil are, but let me make a quick point first.

There really is no good reason to not use a beard oil.

If you’re worried about spending the money because you are short on cash, then you can make your own beard oil and save some money in the long run.

If you don’t want to take the five minutes per day to work it into your beard, well, I don’t know what to say about that. Would you stop brushing your teeth every day to save those five minutes?

Just get up five minutes earlier. Problem solved.

Anyway, I’m not trying to browbeat anybody. If you don’t know what beard oil does then you might not see the point. So let me outline all the ways it works and the benefits of beard oil so you can see what you’d be missing out on if you opted out.

What Does Beard Oil Do?

In a nutshell, beard oil replaces the natural oils that your beard needs to stay hydrated and healthy.

The problem with beards is that as they grow, they need more sebum. Sebum is the oil that your pores secret that coats your beard.

There are many proponents of not using any beard shampoo or other products since our body produces the necessary oils for your beard. I happen to disagree with those guys.

The issue is that when your beard is more than a few weeks old, it doesn’t get enough sebum. Your body simply doesn’t produce enough of it to coat the entire beard.

This is where beard oil comes in.

The right beard oils will mimic your sebum and nourish your beard when your body can’t keep up.

For those that still wonder, does beard oil work, then hopefully you can see how using it is important. If you’re still on the fence then here are some compelling reasons to start using beard oil.

Benefits of Beard Oil | The 7 Reason Your Beard Needs It

Reason 1 – Replace Your Natural Oils

Let me simply repeat what I wrote in the last section as it is probably the most important function.

It replaces the natural sebum that is not produced in enough abundance to help your beard.

Adding a beard oil is fundamental to your beard’s health.

Reason 2 – Prevents Beard Itch

There’s that phase during your beard growing out period when your beard just causes you to itch constantly.

It happens to almost everybody that doesn’t use a beard oil. In some cases, it proves to be too uncomfortable and the beard comes off before it had a chance to really shine.

When your skin is dry since it’s natural oils are all going to the beard it gets itchy. Combine that with a beard going wiry because it isn’t at its peak and that rubs against dry skin.

That’s a potent combination that can easily be resolved by using a beard oil.

Reason 3 – Prevents Beardruff

Related to beard itch is the dreaded beardruff or beard dandruff.

When your skin ends up dry because of the lack of sebum on your skin, it can also flake. These flakes make their way into your beard and that is a disaster.

Another problem is that sebum can end up collecting at the roots of your beard hair and end up getting caked. This also ends up in your beard and looks pretty gross.

Beard oil will not only hydrate your skin to prevent flaking, but the properties of certain oils will also keep your pores and follicle roots clean and healthy.

Reason 4 – Smooths and Softens

When you use beard oil, it acts as a conditioner. Just like using a conditioner after you shampoo your hair softens your hair and gives it a silky feel and appearance, beard oil works the same way.

Your beard ends up with more moisture and is able to retain that moisture to cut down on the wiryness. If you have flyaway hairs and your beard looks really scraggly, this will put an end to that.

Reason 5 – Strengthens

Beard that don’t get enough sebum end up brittle besides just being wiry. They aren’t getting the nutrients to stay healthy and strong.

Many carrier oils, like jojoba and argan oil, can give your beard what it needs. A strong beard means that it will be fuller, less prone to breakage and can grow much longer.

Reason 6 – Prevent or Reduce Acne

Some guys just have acne prone skin and some end up with light acne because of their beard.

Whatever the reason for the acne, your beard oil has the potential to get rid of and prevent acne from returning.

With essential oils like tea tree oil or clary sage, your skin will get disinfected and cleaner than before you had a beard.

Reason 7 – Smell Fresh

A seemingly little detail is the smell of your beard.

The oils in the beard oil can have scents that will leave your beard smelling fresh and clean.

Peppermint, bergamot, orange, lavender. These oils and more have a lasting aroma that can do wonders for the smell of your beard.

Even unscented beard oils will leave your beard smelling fresh without any fragrance at all.

How Does Beard Oil Work?

Beard oil has two main components. Carrier oil and essential oil.

The carrier oil makes up the majority of the beard oil. Most carrier oils have the right properties to keep your beard groomed and healthy even on their own, but their main function is to dilute the essential oils that get added later.

Jojoba is a carrier oil that is very popular in beard oils as it very closely resembles sebum so it is a natural fit for your beard.

Argan oil is another wonderful oil that repairs and strengthens your beard and works great even on its own.

Why not just use jojoba or argan oil on your beard and call it a day?

You could certainly do that and see some great benefits, but when you add essential oils, the beard oil gets supercharged.

The problem is that many essential oils on their own can be very harsh on your skin or hair. Downright dangerous in some cases.

They need to be diluted to be safe and effective to use.

Besides some great scents, essential oils can do things like disinfect your skin, help your beard look fuller, and in some cases even speed up your beard growth.

What is the best beard oil?

With so many great beard oils on the market, it’s hard to pin down which one tops them all.

Since I recently got some Gibs beard oil to try, I thought I would just add a few notes about what I thought of it to this article since I think it is pretty good.

Is Gibs beard oil the best? I really don’t know but I do love how they smell and they seem to work well on the beards of some of my customers so it’s worth a mention.

You don’t really know what is going to work best or what scent you will like. Getting an assortment is an economical way to try out a few and see which one you like.

This Gibs beard oil set has three different scents.

Voodoo Prince has bergamot, sage and sandalwood. For a classic, masculine scent this Gibs beard oil is a good one. The sandalwood is the same essence that shaving cream has so it smells a bit like a barbershop but brightened up with the citrusy bergamot.

Manscaper has nutmeg, leather and vanilla for a musky, deep aroma. If you’re looking for a winter fragrance, then this one is definitely it.

Bushmaster also has a deep, masculine fragrance but this time a little lighter. Saffron, cedar and tobacco flower are brightened up with a hint of grapefruit. This Gibs beard oil has a scent that works year round if you are looking for something that says “rugged”.

Ok, so they smell good. But, does beard oil work from the Gibs Beard Oil Grooming brand?

Taking a look at the list of ingredients you can see that they have all the essentials you would need for a healthy beard.

Argan oil will lead to a strong beard that is healthy and hydrated. Olive oil will keep it soft and nourish it.

They do work well and your beard will love them. The only negative that I found is that they don’t absorb right away. It takes about 15 minutes to fully absorb. At first, your beard will feel a little greasy until the oil makes its way into the follicles.
