While it would seem simple, hair growth is a very complicated thing. And any number of factors could throw a monkey wrench in the works and screw things up. When that happens you end up losing your hair and looking like you aged prematurely.

To get your hair growth systems back on track, it pays to take the best hair growth supplements and some essential oils.

What do they do? Well, it depends on what you need them to do based on what condition has triggered the malfunction.

In this article I will go over several supplements and essential oils that actually work for a specific need and I’ll also cover what vitamins are good for hair growth in general.

I recommend reading the whole article so you can zero in on the right supplement for you, but if you don’t have time, then check out these ones you can find on Amazon.com.

Best essential oils for hair growth

Try to put your crazy sister in law who has an oil for everything out of your mind. Yes, it seems like snake oil to suggest that essential oils can cure some common ailments and disorders, but there is some legitimate science behind it.

Of course, there are plenty of wild claims so it does make sense to take things with a grain of salt.

When considering an essential oil for hair growth, make sure the oil is pure and all natural. Avoid mixes where you don’t know what the ingredients are. If it is a special formula to regrow your hair, read the label to make sure it is actually just the oils and no additives.

I think the best thing is to buy some carrier oils and then essential oils that you can mix yourself.

Carrier oils

Argan Oil

Argan oil is considered one of the best oils you can use for your skin and hair so it is the ideal carrier oil to mix with the best essential oils for hair growth.

It works to help regenerate cells, and lock moisture in your skin and hair.

It may not have any hair growing specific properties, but it does wonders for the health of the follicle and your scalp.

If your hair is strong and healthy then that is an excellent byproduct of trying to regrow your hair.

Castor oil

If you have skin conditions like seborrheic dermatitis, folliculitis, or ringworm, then you really need to use castor oil. It will treat these conditions and more by providing antibacterial and antifungal properties to your scalp.

Adding other essential oils can give you the complete package to clear up your scalp and allow your hair to regrow.

Jojoba oil

Your skin produces sebum, which is the natural oil that coats your hair and keeps it from drying out.

For people that have dry scalp and hair, jojoba is the ideal oil to use. It is the closest thing to your body’s own sebum. This means that it mimics your body and keeps your hair with a healthy glow and prevents it from getting brittle or damaged.

Even people with oily skin can use jojoba oil when mixing it with certain essential oils as it will also help regulate your body’s sebum production.

Essential oils

Rosemary oil

Adding rosemary to any of those carrier oils will boost blood circulation to the scalp. This improved blood flow will bring lots of necessary nutrients to the hair follicle which will lead to healthier and stronger hair.

In some cases, especially if you are treating a skin condition, it can even stimulate growth in dormant follicle roots which will result in new growth.

There is also some speculation that it can even promote nerve growth in the root to kick start growth.

Peppermint oil

This oil is another effective way to promote improved circulation to the scalp. It feels invigorating so you know it’s working!

It doesn’t do much beyond what rosemary oil can do, namely improve circulation, but it feels a lot different. If you like the intense cooling of menthol on your scalp, then use peppermint oil instead of, or in addition to, rosemary oil.

Clary sage oil

If you suffer from severe dandruff, like seborrheic dermatitis, then this is definitely the oil you want to have in your mix.

It will treat the scalp and clean the pores which may be clogged. Opening up these pores will, at a minimum, allow your hair to grow more quickly and with more vigor.

In addition to treating dandruff, it also soothes the scalp leaving it feeling smooth and irritation free.

Lavender oil

If you are using castor oil as your carrier oil, it can be a bit harsh on the scalp. To help sooth the effects, mixing a few drops of lavender oil will do the trick.

It is not just good for relief of irritation, it is also antimicrobial and anti inflammatory. Using it with argan oil or jojoba is also very effective.

How to make your own hair serum

The key to making your own hair growth serum is to show some restraint with the essential oils.

The carrier oil should be the star of the show and do the heavy lifting and the essential oil should be in the background.

Many of these essential oils would be too harsh on your skin and hair if you didn’t dilute them.

Fill a small bottle, maybe a 2 ounce size for instance, about ⅔ full of your carrier oil of choice.

Then add a few drops of each of the essential oils you want to use.

Shake well and cover with an eye dropper lid.

How to apply

If your hair is very thin and your scalp is pretty much exposed, you can use the eyedropper to apply the oil directly onto the skin. Then rub it in with your fingers making sure to coat the hair of the affected area.

Or, if you have more hair in the area you want to use it, you can add it right to the palm of your hands and vigorously rub your hands into the scalp and work your way to the ends of your hair.

This is the way to do it when you are also trying to treat your hair with the oils in addition to trying to grow your hair.

What vitamins are good for hair growth?

Whenever you are dealing with hair loss and looking for a way out, there is a certain type of mindset that will help tremendously.

The idea is to not focus so much on just trying to regrow your hair, but to try to treat the problem holistically.

What I mean by that, is to focus on making your hair that you still have stronger and healthier.

Then, if you grow some back, then that is a bonus.

To make your hair healthier, it pays to use some vitamins that help to regrow your hair while also nourishing the hair and scalp.

There are two ways to get those vitamins into your hair. Topically and orally. Essential oils are great to apply directly onto the scalp and hair and the best hair growth supplements can be taken in pill or powder form.

So, I will break down the list of vitamins for hair growth into these two categories.

Vitamin A

One of the best ways to boost collagen is with Vitamin A. Since your hair and scalp can definitely benefit from an increase in collagen, a hair treatment that is either a topical oil,  cream or a supplement rich in Vitamin A will improve the appearance of your hair.

In addition, Vitamin A also promotes cell growth which can give your hair a boost when it is in the growth phase.

Vitamin E

Free radicals in the scalp and hair can lead to a slow down in growth, or hair loss. To beat those free radicals, Vitamin E should be at the top of the list as it is an ideal antioxidant.

Besides that, it also speeds up the regeneration of skin cells. If you have scalp issues like dry or damaged skin, then this increase will lead to healthier skin which in turn leads to healthier hair.

Vitamin D

At this point everybody knows how important Vitamin D is to your happiness and that if we aren’t getting enough sunlight then we need a supplement rich with it.

What not a lot of people know is that it is an important vitamin to also regrow hair.

New research suggests that a diet rich in Vitamin D can regrow hair follicles.

Any new follicles means new hair growth. It might not grow a full head of hair, but any extras will not go unnoticed.

To keep your hair follicles clear and the oil glands working properly, zinc is very important. Since clogged pores can lead to hair loss and excess sebum can cause seborrheic dermatitis, it is vital that a supplement include it.

It also encourages tissue growth and cell repair.

If you are overcoming a skin condition on the scalp zinc can speed up the healing process. The best hair growth supplements for regrowing hair when you have bad dandruff, eczema, psoriasis or any other skin condition should 100% include zinc.

Iron is very important in blood circulation. Improved circulation can bring needed nutrients to the scalp and into the hair follicles.

If you have anemia, then your hair loss is likely tied directly to that. In which case, it is vital to add more iron to your diet through a supplement.

B Vitamins

B-vitamins help create red blood cells, which are what carry the nutrients through the blood. So increasing blood flow and also adding more red blood cell count can really pack a punch when it comes to delivering vitamins to the hair and scalp.

Another B Vitamin is biotin. This is one of the building blocks for hair.

The best hair growth supplements should have plenty of biotin as it is one of the best vitamins for hair growth. I’ll go over some Biotin hair growth reviews in the next section.

If you want to read more in depth about supplements for hair growth you can check out this article about them here.

Here’s a quick list of some of the best hair growth supplements you can get on Amazon.com:

Biotin hair growth reviews

Before I get into the review of products with Biotin, let me first go into a little bit of detail about what it is and what it does.

Biotin plays a key role in healthy hair growth. It is fundamental when the hair is in a growth phase to get this vitamin for thicker and stronger hair from the generation of new hair cells.

Not many people have a deficiency in Biotin, but those that do will see a huge increase in their hair growth and general health of their hair.one thing to note, is that many men are not likely to have a biotin deficiency, yet many pregnant women are. Men can take a supplement with Biotin and see some results, but the biggest beneficiaries of supplements with it as a main ingredient will be pregnant women.

Should you take it or are you wasting money with Biotin?

If it is the sole vitamin in the supplement, you probably won’t get much out of it. If it is among many other vitamins that are good for hair growth, then it may be a bit of extra insurance.

Another thing to note is that it doesn’t work against male pattern baldness. That goes for all supplements, really. Since the cause is genetic, you wouldn’t see any benefit from using a biotin based supplement.

HAIRtamin Man Hair Growth Vitamins

To make sure your hair is healthy it pays to use the best hair growth supplements that pack the vitamins and nutrients besides just providing Biotin. Though this one has that in abundance with 10mg of Biotin or roughly 3,000% of the average daily value.

Reading Biotin hair growth reviews, you’ll see varying results. Some people will say it works great and others not so much.

Basically, your mileage will vary, but there is only one way to find out if it will work to regrow your hair.

The bonus here is that with HAIRtamin you will treat the hair with a multi pronged approach that will leave the hair stronger and fuller than before. So, even if you don’t get much growth from the Biotin, your hair will love you for it anyway.

The mix of vitamins and nutrients will help regulate your testosterone which plays a big part in your hair loss.

Reducing the effects of testosterone, the hope is that it will slow down the hair loss and then add some vitamins that could potentially regrow some hair.

There are ingredients to block DHT, which is the hormone that men produce in excess that leads to hair loss.

All in all, there seems to be everything you need to stop hair from falling out, regrow some hair, make the hair grow faster and leave your hair healthier than ever.

It could take more than a couple of months to see any growth, so make sure you stick with it and don’t give up before it has a chance to work.

Final Thoughts

Hopefully, after reading this article about the best hair growth supplements and the best essential oils for hair growth, you have a better understanding of how to take control of your hair loss.

If you have read other articles regarding hair loss on this site, then you no doubt are familiar with my refrain. Don’t expect a miracle and you won’t be disappointed.
