With anything in life, if something is worth doing, it is worth doing right.

This includes growing a beard very high atop the list.

Is it hard to grow a beard? No, it is not.

Can you just grow a beard and be done with it? That’s a big No to that too.

If you plan to grow a beard you also need to plan to groom it.

Instead of looking on other guy’s beards with envy, have everybody looking at yours by using the best beard products that you absolutely need.

In this article I will go over a list of essentials to have for when you’ve started growing a beard, or have decided to start taking care of the one you already have.

I’ll list each category and then give you a review of the best beard products within that category so you can make an informed decision.

Why you need to use beard products

As I mentioned in the introduction, it seems like growing a beard is as simple as just letting facial hair come out of your skin.

This isn’t to say that beard care is complicated or time consuming. Just that you do need to have a plan and use the right tools and products to make sure it looks good.

What happens if you don’t maintain your beard using beard products?

For one, your beard will not be nourished properly and won’t be healthy. Your facial hair needs sebum, your body’s natural oils, to hydrate and bring nutrients into the follicle. The problem is that there usually isn’t enough to go around when your beard starts getting longer than a half inch or so.

When it isn’t healthy and moisturized, it becomes brittle so it feels rough. And then the ends split so it ends up looking frizzy and wild.

What happens when you start using the best beard products and grooming your beard? Your beard will feel much softer and will have a healthy glow to it. It will be easier to manage and will look much smoother with less flyaway hairs and frizziness.

People will notice when you’ve started grooming your beard, and using the best beard products will make it look even better than you can imagine.

Basics of beard grooming

Your beard grooming starts with healthy skin.

So, all of the best beard products that you end up using should be as much a benefit to the skin as it is to the facial hair. Since your hair grows from your skin, you need to make sure you are nourishing and stimulating your skin as well as keeping it free from dead cells buildup and other grime.

Start with a holistic approach meaning you are treating your skin and beard as a whole package and you will see much better results.

The basic idea is that you will be using products that will bring nutrients and moisture to the skin and hair to make sure they are getting what they need to thrive and be healthy. Then you want to stimulate the circulation to increase the blood flow to the root of the follicle which will bring a boost of oxygen and nutrients to the hair. The best beard products will improve the circulation and are packed with all the best nutrients and vitamins to nourish your beard.

In fact, this circulation is so important that you will notice your beard grow faster once you’ve started properly grooming it.

Lastly, you want to strengthen the beard by locking that moisture in so it gets less damaged by the effects of the sun and environment.

Here is the list by category of the best products for your beard

Best Beard Wash | Billy Jealousy

For everything else to work in the beard grooming equation, your face and facial hair need to be clean.

Using a beard shampoo that cleans your skin as well as the hair while adding moisture back is ideal.

I love Billy Jealousy as they make the best beard products. I think they are formulated so well for the job that they need to do. This beard wash is great because it does everything you need it to do to give you a soft beard that gives your beard a chance to grow healthy.

First, it cleans the skin of grime and strips the dead skin cells from the pores. This alone wets your beard up for success.

Though I always recommend not washing your beard too often, say once or twice per week, the formula is gentle enough that you can use it more often.

It is very rich in aloe vera juice which is one of the best ways to moisturize your skin and hair. This is very important since washing your beard will strip it of the natural oil, sebum, that your body produces exactly for this.

Then the hair is strengthened with soy protein which helps bring more collagen to the roots of the hair making it soft, yet strong.

The scent is also very nice without being overpowering. It has that classic barbershop smell with sandalwood and oakmoss while being lightened up a bit with some floral lavender. The scent doesn’t last too long though so it isn’t really important. And you should be adding beard oil or balm so it will actually be covered up anyway.

My only complaint is that it isn’t 100% natural and there are some hard to pronounce ingredients. It is mostly natural though and doesn’t contain parabens or sulfates so it has that going for it anyway.

Best Beard Oil | Honest Amish

beard grooming tips

Honest Amish has been around a long time. Since before the beard trend really exploded into what it is today. So, it’s safe to say they know a thing or two about what a beard needs.

What does a beard need? Well, after you wash it, it needs to be conditioned with some essential oils. You need to replace the sebum that was stripped away and also to give the skin and hair the nutrients it needs.

How does it do that?

It contains only all natural ingredients. Basically, a who’s who of essential oils and carrier oils that all of the best beard products need to soften and strengthen your follicles.

The Classic Blend contains Avocado oil, Virgin Pumpkin Seed oil, Sweet Almond oil, Apricot Kernel oil, Golden Jojoba oil, Virgin Argan oil, Kukui oil.

Argan oil is one of the best things you can use for your hair and skin as it is rich with vitamins A, C and E. Its properties help boost cell regrowth in hair for healthier, stronger beards. Also contributing to the strength of the hair is avocado oil which prevents breakage from getting brittle.

If you have a patchy beard then this is one of the best beard oil you can use since it contains sweet pumpkin seed oil which stimulates the skin and thus invigorates the roots of the hair. If you have thin wispy hair that doesn’t seem to want to grow then give this a shot as it should help.

There are no other additives. Just the oils themselves so you know there is nothing harsh that will cause any unwanted side effects.

There isn’t even any fragrance added. It does have a slight smell though just from the earthiness of the oils, but there is no essential oil added for its aroma. So, if you use it with any cologne or fragrance it stays neutral and doesn’t compete.

There is a continuing raging debate between beard oil and beard balm. Which one is better and what should you use? There is a simple rule of thumb. Shorter beards can use beard oil as it is still easy enough to distribute evenly and won’t weigh your beard down.

If your beard is over an inch long or so then you should be using a beard balm.

Best Beard Balm | Honest Amish

beard grooming tips

It should be no surprise that if the best beard oil is from Honest Amish that they would also make the best beard balm.

All of their line is among the best beard products in general.

Before I get into the reason why you should use Honest Amish beard balm, let me go over why you should be using a beard balm if your beard is even slightly long.

If you didn’t read the article I linked to then the gist of what the difference is between an oil and a balm is that obviously, oil is oily. It is a liquid so if you need to use it on a long beard to make sure it is completely covered then you need a lot of it. And that will weigh your beard down and make it look greasy.

Instead, use a beard balm which also contains a lot of beneficial oils but also has a wax in it so a little of it will adhere to the beard and provide the essential vitamins and features of the oils present over the course of the day. In fact, this wax also helps your beard to be shaped any way you like.

In the case of Honest Amish, it contains Avocado oil, Virgin Pumpkin Seed oil, Sweet Almond oil, and Argan oil just like the beard oil. The biggest difference with the balm is that it is spreadable so it also contains shea butter and cocoa butter among others.

It’s a double whammy between the oils and the butters to really hydrate and soften your beard.

It is softer than a lot of beard balms out there so it is much easier to spread. Just warm some in the palm of your hand and then rub it in.

After only a couple of days, you will notice your beard feels so soft to the touch, has a healthy and glowing sheen to it and is smoother. You’ll be able to style your beard to a degree, but if it is really long and the style is a little complex you’ll need a beard wax.

Best Beard Wax | Can You Handlebar

Ok, this is a mustache wax, but guess what, your mustache is part of your beard. So this works as one of the best beard products if you need to style your beard to get it to do something more complex than just lying there.

Or, if you decide to grow your mustache or goatee longer than the rest of your beard then this wax will really come in handy.

The metal container is a bit small and it only has an ounce of wax, but this will last you quite a while. To cover a whole beard you only need the equivalent of a couple of grains of rice. For a mustache, then, the equivalent of a single grain of rice is enough.

The best part about this wax is that it is all natural. There are no petroleum by-products at all.

This is called a primary wax as it is a lighter hold than their other one called a secondary. It is more than firm enough for beards, but if you have a really long handlebar mustache that needs more backbone you might want to try the secondary.

In fact, the primary is so firm that you may need to use a hairdryer to heat it to where it can be scooped out with your fingernail. Then just rub it into your palm to get it to be evenly applied. Use just the tips of your fingers if you are only styling your mustache.

Best Beard Brush | Seven Potions

If you have a beard but not a beard brush, then you are really selling your beard short. Why do you need a beard brush?

When you brush your beard you are helping to distribute the necessary oils from your skin to the ends of your hair. If you are using a beard oil or balm then this will make sure that all of your facial hair is getting the benefits from it. A beard brush stimulates the skin to keep the blood circulation flowing to the roots to bring all the nutrients your hair needs. And on top of it all, it will keep your beard smooth and easy to manage.

Not just any beard brush will do though. It really needs to be boar hair bristles. If you use any old military style brush with plastic or nylon bristles, it will tear your beard up and leave it looking way worse than before you brushed it.

Also the density of the bristles counts. Too tightly packed and the hair can get in there and separated so you aren’t getting full and even distribution of the oils.

This is why I highly recommend the brush by Seven Potions.

It is boar hair and with just the right density of bristles. It is gentle enough to not irritate your skin but has enough backbone to exfoliate and stimulate your face. And the density is just right. Dense enough to get the job done but not so dense that hair can’t easily pass through the bristles.

The handle material doesn’t really matter in the long run, but I do like the look of the stained pearwood of this brush.

It shows that the brush is very well crafted. In fact, it is so well made that you won’t see much shedding of bristles after using it. For the first few times, you may notice a small handful come out, but that is normal. Some brushes have a lot fall out and continue over time but that is not the case with this Seven Potions.

No list of the best beard products is complete without a brush and this one is one of the best.

Best Beard Comb | Kent Handmade Combs

When your beard is longer, like over an inch or so in length, it starts getting tangled and hard to manage. This is when a beard comb comes into play.

But, not just any comb. Don’t use a comb for your hair on your beard. Those are generally made out of plastic and will cause static electricity that will make your beard look frizzy and unruly. Plus it seriously damages your beard since the plastic tines are not smooth. This tears the beard follicles and totally ruin all the hard work you’ve put into your beard.

The top of the line when it comes to combs, in general, are ones made by Kent. In the case of this set of beard combs, you have the ultimate in beard maintenance tools. They are made of certain cellulose, which technically is plastic but it is not like the type used for regular combs. And these are hand buffed so there are no ridges on the tines to tear your beard.

There are two reasons I like to recommend these over some more popular wooden ones.

First, you get a set of three so you have pretty much every phase of your beard growth covered. As your beard gets longer you need wider bristles, plus you have a small comb to handle your mustache.

The other reason is that since they aren’t made of wood, they last a lot longer. Think about where you do your beard grooming. Usually in the bathroom where things are always getting wet. Lots of guys end up damaging their beard combs by leaving them in a humid or even wet area that kills the wood.

These are far more durable, less likely to have any teeth get broken and do not cause any static either.

You can’t go wrong with Kent, as they make some of the best beard products out there.

Best Beard Trimmer | Philips Norelco Multigroomer

Even if you are trying to grow your beard really long, you need to have a trimmer in your beard care arsenal. It may seem counterintuitive to need to trim your beard while you grow it, but trust me, you will be glad you have one.

No matter how well you maintain your beard, you are going to end up with split ends at some point. As your beard grows it is exposed to the elements and damage is inevitable even when you are using all of the best beard products. The longer your beard is, then the longer that follicle has been exposed.

You’ll need to be trimming the ends to keep it smooth and manageable at least once in a while.

I love this Multi Groomer since it has all the bits you need to take care of every phase of your beard growth. You can trim and edge your beard and even shave the part of your face that isn’t covered by glorious facial hair since it has a foil electric shaver attachment.

There is an attachment for just about any job. Plastic comb attachments will give you an accurate and even trim when you are looking to keep your beard all one length, or you can use different lengths if you want to taper your beard. Of course, the blade without any attachments is great if you think you can handle doing your trim freehand or with a comb.

In fact, you’ll get a ton of use out of these trimmers since they are multi functional. They aren’t just for your beard. You’ll also use it to trim your hairline, body, nose and ears and any other place with unwanted hair.

If you plan to keep your beard to a set length then a trimmer is indispensable.

You can see how it stacks up against some other great beard trimmers by clicking the link.

Best Beard Scissors | Suvorna 5”

Whether you use them in conjunction with, or in place of a beard trimmer, you should have a pair of beard trimming scissors.

What’s the point of using scissors when you can just use a trimmer?

Control.

Using scissors means you can accurately trim smaller areas, for example. If you only need to trim around your mouth for instance, you can easily get to that area with the tips of scissors and only cut the spots you want.

Plus, it is far easier to make a wrong move with some trimmers and suddenly you have a bald spot in the middle of your beard.

If you only need to do spot trims to get those flyaway hairs, then a small pair of good quality scissors will get the job done. And in seconds since you don’t have to take out a piece of machinery and set it up to only need it for a few seconds.

This pair by Suvorna will last you a lifetime. They are made out of very hard and durable Japanese steel that will stay sharp for a very long time.

The shape is ideal ergonomically so it fits in every hand and is easy to navigate a beard with.

Getting around your beard with all its different angles and nooks is not easy. But with a mirror and some dexterity, these scissors are up to the task.

Final Thoughts

I know how it looks to you right now. You’re thinking that this is overkill and are already trying to decide which beard products you can live without and which ones you will probably get.

Trust me when I tell you that you need just about every item on the list. It may seem like a lot of fuss, but if you use the best beard products then you will have a beard that other guys look at in envy. And ladies that love beards will definitely notice the difference.

Obviously, there are tons of beard products out there and these are not the only ones. Just the ones I think you can’t go wrong with.
